Travelling in Europe?
Know your EHIC
From the many charms of Rome, to the cafes of Brussels, the fashion of Milan, or the spa resorts in Poland; Europe has an unquestionably wide appeal to travellers of any age.
Maybe you are looking to explore the Eastern European countries, many of whom are starting to flourish as members of the EU? Or perhaps you want to find out whether all the fuss about Barcelona is justified, or even the more quietly praised Valencia? Either way, you'll need to know about the standard health card that's needed to get you hospital treatment throughout the European Union.
The old E111 form, which you used to get in the post office, was replaced in January 2006 by the European Health Insurance Card, or EHIC. A valid EHIC enables you to receive the same treatment in Spanish, or German (to name two examples) hospitals as locals are entitled to.
If you have a pre-existing medical condition that could be exacerbated on holiday, this could be especially important to you. Whilst it's not a substitute for medical travel insurance, it's always worth carrying the EHIC with you.
You can apply for a card using three methods:
- Online at the Department of Health,
- Or by telephone 0845 606 203
- Or in post offices
The European Health Insurance Card is valid in these countries:
| Austria Belgium Cyprus (but not Northern Cyprus) Czech Republic Denmark Estonia Finland France Germany Greece |
Hungary Iceland Ireland Italy Latvia Liechtenstein Lithuania Luxembourg Malta |
Netherlands Norway Poland Portugal Slovakia Slovenia Spain Sweden Switzerland |
